4th of July Celebration
The City of Valparaiso has announced plans to host 4th of July festivities, modifying the event and expanding the outdoor venue to several locations to provide options for families and to allow for social distancing. “We’ve thought creatively to come up with our best ideas to balance safety with our desire to reward our community for all the sacrifices over recent months,” said Mayor Matt Murphy. “We’re broadening the venue and timing events throughout the day so people can choose how they’d like to enjoy the day,” he said. To add safety, venues will have hand sanitizer and hand wash stations available, as well as masks and abundant portable restrooms.
The day will begin with the 4th of July Blast 5K Run/Walk and Lit’l Firecracker 2K Run (with a staggered start) and a “Lift Up Valpo” Parade downtown, featuring first responders and Valpo businesses; followed by the popular Valparaiso Market, a free concert at the Porter Health Amphitheater featuring the Crawpuppies, and a traditional firework show at Urschel Field on Cumberland Drive. The concert and fireworks will be free, but ticketed, events in order to preserve space for social distancing. “We’ve really tried to offer many options so people can choose what fits their family. We hope people will come out, visit our businesses and enjoy Independence Day,” he said.
