Mayor Jon Costas
Jon Costas was elected in 2023 to return as mayor of the City of Valparaiso after leading a dramatic revitalization of the city when he served as mayor from 2003 through 2019. A proven leader, Costas brought about many changes that enhanced quality of life, property values and opportunities for all. These advancements included Central Park Plaza, Urschel Pavilion, Eastgate and north side redevelopments, the Route 30 transformation, new police and public works facilities, a renovated city hall, the V-line and Chicago Dash, community grants and so much more – many accomplished with state and federal grants won as a result of strong planning. As a result of strong fiscal management, the City of Valparaiso was able to keep taxes low, the city’s finances strong and even build a healthy rainy-day fund.
In addition to his city leadership, Costas has been an elder law attorney and a local small business owner for more than 40 years. He has also served as an elder and pastor at Calvary Church in Valparaiso. He holds a business degree, a law degree, a master’s in practical theology and a doctorate in transformational leadership. He has served on many boards and commissions, including 14 years on Indiana’s Higher Education Commission. Costas and his wife, Sharon, have four adult children, five grandchildren and live on the north side Valparaiso.
