TRASH
PICKUP
Valparaiso
uses an automated trash collection system and uniform trash containers
to maintain a cleaner, more efficient city. The System allows trash
to be collected with a single, one-person vehicle as a mechanized
"arm" lifts the container, empties the waste, and returns
the container to the curb. Our residents also like the convenience
of the large, wheeled containers which make it easier to get to
and from the curb.
|
How
it works:
|
|
|
Place
your bagged trash in your city-issued, wheeled container,
which holds 8-10 garbage bags.
|
|
|
On
your regular trash day, roll the container to the curb by
7 :00 am.
|
|
|
Place
the container with the arrow on the lid facing toward the
street. Please avoid placing the container under low hanging
tree branches or within 3 feet of any obstruction, including
parked cars.
|
|
|
Empty
trash containers should be removed from the curb by 7 :00
pm.

Trash
Consolidation:
While
the city's regular monthly trash fee restricts residents to one
trash container per household, Public Works customarily picks up
the occasional large item, such as an appliance or piece of furniture,
as a service -- at no extra charge. This service will continue;
however, it will be limited to a resident's
regular trash day. In addition, recyclable items
will be picked up on residents' regular recycling day. Residents
who leave trash at the curb for longer periods may be subject to
fines of up to $50 per day. Click
here for more information.
Holidays:
On holidays that fall on Monday- Thursday, your pick up will be
delayed one day. If a holiday falls on a Friday, pick up will happen
on Thursday instead. Click
here for a schedule of holidays observed by the city.
Extra
Trash and Holiday Cleanouts:
Public Works will pick up additional trash placed outside of your
container for a fee of $15 per cubic yard if it is the result of
normal household usage. Public Works does not accept any materials
generated by contractors, including construction or landscaping
work.
During
Holiday Cleanouts, up to three cubic yards of additional household-generated
trash is picked up free of charge. After three cubic yards, you
may incur an additional charge of$15 per cubic yard. Holiday Cleanouts
occur the week following observed holidays, with a special Spring
Cleanout week scheduled for the week following Easter Sunday. During
these special weeks, additional trash may be put out on your regular
trash pick-up day. Extra trash should be placed next to your trash
container.

What
should NOT be placed in the container:
You should not place construction materials (brick, rock, cement,
wiring, insulation), tires, motor oil, paint, hot ashes, gasoline,
household hazardous waste, yard debris or grass in your container.

place on the property.
How
to dispose of latex paint:
Simply remove the lid from the paint can and fill
the can with sawdust or cat litter until the paint dries. Then,
if possible, peel out and discard the hardened paint with your normal
household waste. The empty latex paint can may be placed in your
recycling container.
How
to dispose of hazardous waste:
Porter County provides annual turn-in days for hazardous household
waste. Contact Porter County Solid Waste at 465-3694 or visit www.itmeanstheworld.org
for more information.
Recycling:
Through an aggressive recycling program, the city of Valparaiso
is able to divert 49% of
its trash from a landfill through recycling. Click
