2009 Winter Storm
Lake and Porter Counties were hard-hit by between 16" to over 2' of snow over a 24 hour period. Valparaiso was completely shut down; city and county governments were closed; streets were shut down; cars, mailboxes and signs were buried and sometimes lost under several inches of snow. Residents who have lived here for decades recall the snowstorm of 1967-68, where over 2' of snow buried the region. Click here to view more images. |

2008 Flooding
Many towns and cities in Lake and Porter Counties were hard-hit by rains generated by Hurricane Ike. Valparaiso was no exception - over 11 inches fell in two (2) days. Ditches overflowed, streets were flooded, basement filled with water and mud, and city systems were strained to the limit and beyond. It will take awhile for the region to recover; click here to view images taken Sunday, August 14, of flooded and damaged areas throughout the city. |
