Friday, 11.30.12 @ 7 pm

This upcoming Fourth Friday at The Valparaiso Interantional Center, Purdue North Central Professor Ken Kincaid and some of his HIST401 Indigenous Traditions of Latin America students will discuss their reenactment of the Andean ritual meal called the Pachamanca. For native highlanders, the Pachamanca represents a cultural adaptation to the challenges that life in the Andes mountains present, while also cementing community ties and celebrating the earth’s bounty. Dr. Kincaid’s students collaborated with the Peruvian American community in the region in preparing their own Pachamanca.

American
banjo player Abigail Washburn pairs American folk elements with the
sounds of China, creating music unlike anything anybody's ever heard
before. She has been featured on PBS, NPR, and is a TED Fellow.
Abigail
made a name for herself singing in Chinese on her debut album Song of
the Traveling Daughter (2005), and with her collaborative music project
known as Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet, a group that includes
now-husband and banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck, cellist Ben Sollee and
fiddler Casey Driessen.
After an earthquake devastated the western province of Sichuan in 2008,
she teamed up with Shanghai-based producer David Liang in 2009 to raise
money and awareness for the victims. A benefit album, Afterquake, turned
the voices of people affected by the disaster into music.
Washburn
will serve as artist-in-residence on Valpo's campus from Oct. 15-17.
During that time, she will rehearse with a variety of guest and
university musicians who will collaborate with her for a portion of her
Oct. 16 performance. Washburn will collaborate with Chinese musicians
from the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, the Shanghai
Conservatory of Music, and Xishan High School of Renmin University, as
well as Valparaiso University's own Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble.
