Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission was created by the City Council in 2000 after several community leaders spoke of concerns for preservation of Valparaiso’s historic structures. The Commission has since established procedures for creating a local historic district, created a brochure to guide the process, and conducted several successful walking tours.

Historic preservation helps to protect historic homes, commercial buildings, and entire districts throughout the community which give that sense of connection to the community's past, creating an unique environment and feel to the community and helps to strengthen the local economy by promoting tourism and encouraging investment. The Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana has determined that historic preservation designation can not only revitalize a once depressed neighborhood but help to increase property values throughout the district. Please feel free to contact the Commission with your comments and questions. You may reach the city representative, Tyler Kent, Assistant Planner, at (219) 462-1161 or visit him at City Hall, 166 Lincolnway, Valparaiso, Indiana, 46383.
