Silhavy Road to Close April 18 for Railroad Crossing Repairs

Silhave Road to Close

Silhavy Road will be closed from Evans Avenue south to LaPorte Avenue beginning April 18 for reconstruction of the railroad crossing as the roadway project continues, announced City Engineer Mike Jabo. “While we regret the inconvenience for motorists, this crossing has been requested by many in the community and we’re eager to see it improved,” said Jabo. “We are especially thankful for the cooperation of the Canadian National Railroad for supporting the City’s request to make this project happen.”

While not originally included in the project, the City of Valparaiso, Canadian National Railroad, INDOT and the contractor for the Silhavy Road project have worked out an arrangement to replace the worn railroad crossing on Silhavy Road. The work will be completed by the Canadian National railroad and is estimated to take approximately 5 days to replace the crossing, requiring closure of the roadway. Detours will be posted.

The Silhavy Road project began last year, with work continuing south of the railroad tracks this season. Following the closure for railroad crossing reconstruction, Silhavy will reopen, with traffic restricted to one lane each for northbound and southbound traffic. The pathway and sidewalk will remain closed for safety reasons. Once complete, the Silhavy project will add a turning lane, enhance stormwater management and provide a smooth, lasting roadway surface, he said.

“We encourage caution for motorists during the construction season. We also ask pedestrians to find alternate routes while we complete this project which will add efficiency and safety for all,” said Jabo. “In spite of the recent rains, the contractor is making good progress and it is anticipated that sidewalks and pathway along Silhavy will be completed within the next two to three weeks. If the weather continues to be moderate, it is expected that the majority of the Silhavy Road work will be completed by the end of May,” he said.
