Roy Summerville has been named to the Advisory Human Relations Council for the City of Valparaiso, announced Mayor Matt Murphy. “Roy Summerville is a newcomer to city government who brings a fresh perspective from working within the community and with youth for decades. We’re excited to welcome his insight to the Human Relations Council,” said Murphy.
Summerville is a math teacher with River Forest Community Schools in New Chicago who brings more than 20 years of experience of working with youth. He teaches advanced placement classes as well as computer science and personal finance. He has also served in leadership positions with Christ Lutheran Church in Valparaiso. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University West Lafayette and his teaching license through Calumet College of St. Joseph. A self-proclaimed nerd, Summerville also enjoys running 5K races and sponsoring the anime club at River Forest. Summerville and his wife, Melissa, have three children and live in Valparaiso.
The Advisory Human Relations Council advances and supports community inclusion, providing counsel and assistance to the mayor. Appointed by the mayor, the Board includes 14 members, including five non-voting members representing the City of Valparaiso, Valparaiso University and the Valparaiso Community Schools.
